Mabuhay! As we wind down the celebration of Filipino Heritage Month, we honour stories that shape our community’s legacy. One such story is that of Ida Beltran, who was presented by the Edmonton City Council in City Chambers as Edmonton’s 10th Historian Laureate on 26 May 2026. ![]()

In his post marking the event, Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack said that the Historian Laureate designation is awarded to individuals who are celebrating the heritage of the city through researching, documenting and interpreting the people, places and events that shape Edmonton.
Ms. Beltran had spearheaded the Echoes of Identity: Tracking Filipino Cultural Landscapes in Edmonton cultural mapping project, of which the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary wholeheartedly supported as an important component in strengthening the Filipino diaspora communities in Alberta and deepening cross-cultural understanding.
We are confident that during her term as Historian Laureate, Ms. Beltran will not only continue her work on the Echoes of Identity, but also help other communities in Edmonton create their own cultural maps which can serve as a template in documenting their own stories as well.![]()
