In celebration of Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino and its theme “Musika at Himig Natin: Tradisyon, Industriya, at Bagong Tinig,” the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary presents two musical features that honor the depth and diversity of Filipino cultural expression.
The first feature showcases the Salip and Banga dances of the Cordillera: Salip, a ritual courtship dance inspired by the movements of a rooster wooing a hen, and Banga, a graceful portrayal of Kalinga women balancing stacked clay pots as they carry water from the river.
The second feature highlights Kundiman performed by the Ateneo Chamber Singers-a beloved Filipino art song rooted in the 19th century, known for its romantic and deeply patriotic themes. The word comes from the Tagalog expression “kung hindi man,” meaning “if it were not so.”
Two distinct musical traditions that honour our roots, showcase our artistry, and uplift the emerging voices carrying Filipino music into the future.
