26 September 2026 – Consul General Emma Sarne and a team from the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary and MWO-Vancouver reaffirmed their commitment to remain engaged with the Filipino community in Fort McMurray, AB through a one and a half day Consular Outreach Mission from 26 to 27 September 2026.
The mission included a town hall consultation with Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Tany Yao, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Councillor Don Scott, and officers and members of the Filipino-Canadian Association of Fort McMurray. The meeting provided a forum for community members to raise concerns affecting Filipino workers in the area, including questions about access to their Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions upon returning to the Philippines.
Ms. Anne Jelyka Gubat of the Migrant Workers Office in Vancouver (MWO-Vancouver) also discussed the important contributions of Filipino workers in Fort McMurray and shared information relevant to their eventual return and reintegration in the Philippines, enabling them to make informed plans for their future.
The outreach mission provided 404 clients with 448 individual services, bringing consular services closer to Filipinos in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas. It reinforced the Philippine Consulate in Calgary’s commitment to staying connected with the Filipino community and responding to its needs despite the distance from Calgary. END
