24 March 2026 – The Philippine Consulate General in Calgary attended a dinner hosted by the Consul General of Japan Takehiko Wajima at his official residence on 24 March 2026, underscoring the role of cuisine in fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas, especially highlighting the growing importance of culinary diplomacy.
The intimate gathering provided an opportunity to exchange views on promoting cultural heritage through food. Consul General Wajima mentioned that Japanese cuisine, widely recognized for its quality and distinctiveness, continues to serve as a bridge connecting communities and deepening appreciation for Japan’s rich traditions.
During the engagement, Consul General Emma Sarne highlighted the Philippines’ own culinary initiatives, and personally invited Consul General and Mrs. Wajima to the 5th Edition of the Filipino Restaurant Month in Canada (FRMC) happening for the whole month of April. FRMC is a joint project of the four Philippine Foreign Service Posts in Canada (the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa and the Consulates General in Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver), the Philippine Trade & Investment Centre – Toronto and the Philippine Department of Tourism in SanFrancisco which celebrates Filipino flavours and the contributions of Filipino-owned restaurants across the country.
The gathering served as a testament to how shared meals can open pathways for cultural understanding, and innovative approaches to diplomacy. END
