18 December 2025 – The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary was filled with the warm and festive spirit of Filipino Christmas as it hosted Paskong Pinoy: Parol, Puto Bumbong at Pastores on 17 December 2025 in partnership with Barkada YYC, Salingpusa Creatives, Binhi ng Lahi Folkloric Dance Ensemble, and Pacific Hut Restaurant.
Held amidst a winter storm in Alberta, the activity transformed the Consulate into a warm and welcoming space where participants were able to experience Filipino Christmas traditions through gastronomy, hands-on learning, and storytelling through music and movement.
Participants took part in a parol-making workshop, a joint initiative of Barkada YYC and Salingpusa Creatives, in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary, which brought together generations of Filipino families and friends creating a joyful space while they craft the iconic Filipino lanterns (parol). “The parol is not just a star or a decoration, it symbolizes hope – the beginning of Christmas,” mentioned Consul General Emma R. Sarne in her welcome remarks.
Adding to the cultural richness of the program, the Binhi ng Lahi Folkloric Dance Ensemble captivated the audience with their performance of Pastores Taft, a traditional Filipino Christmas dance depicting the shepherd’s journey to witness the birth of Christ.
The event was made more meaningful as participants gathered to savor the beloved staples of a Filipino Christmas: puto bumbong and bibingka – traditional Filipino delicacies usually enjoyed after the Simbang Gabi. These treats were made available through the support of Pacific Hut Restaurant.
Through music, dance, crafts, and food, Paskong Pinoy successfully showcased the richness of Philippine culture and strengthened community ties, reminding everyone that the spirit of Christmas transcends borders. The event was aimed at introducing and deepening appreciation of traditional Filipino Christmas practices among Filipino-Canadians, particularly the youth and families.
The event reaffirmed the commitment of the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary and its partners in preserving Filipino heritage while fostering unity among Filipinos in its jurisdiction. END.
