Isang Gabi ng Kundiman, at iba pa caps PCG Calgary’s National Arts Month celebration

28 February 2026 – In celebration of National Arts Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary, in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Alberta (UPAAA), successfully mounted a special concert entitled “Isang Gabi ng Kundiman, at iba pa” at the St. Gerard’s Parish Function Hall in Calgary, Alberta.

The concert featured Mr. Ronald Mervin Sison, a Filipino-Canadian Tenor and member of the Manitoba Opera, whose interpretations of beloved Kundiman classics captivated the audience. He was joined by talented homegrown artists from the FlipSide Theatre Collective highlighting the depth of talent within the Filipino-Canadian community in Alberta.

Beyond the Kundiman, the repertoire also included selections from the sub-genre of the Harana, and the Zarzuela, reflecting the richness and diversity of Philippine musical heritage. Among the featured pieces were “Dahil Sa Iyo” (Miguel Velarde Jr., 1938), “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (Constancio De Guzman, 1954), and “Bayan Ko” (Tagalog lyrics by Jose Corazon de Jesus, music by Constancio de Guzman) from the 1902 Zarzuela “Walang Sugat” by Filipino playwright Severino Reyes. Brief historical notes and insights on the origins and evolution of the Kundiman and Harana were also shared, providing context and deepening audience appreciation of these enduring art forms.

In her remarks, Consul General Emma Sarne underscored the significance of holding the concert in February, widely regarded as the month of love. She noted that while the Kundiman is often associated with romantic devotion, it likewise embodies love of country, longing for home, fidelity, and quiet sacrifice – values that continue to resonate with Filipinos overseas.

More than a musical performance, the event served as a platform to promote and preserve the traditional Kundiman, ensuring that it remains relevant to present and future generations of Filipinos in Canada. The event was attended by members of the Calgary Consular Corps, community leaders, and music enthusiasts.

Celebrated every February under Presidential Proclamation No. 683 of 1991, National Arts Month is a nationwide recognition of Filipino artistry and creativity. More than a ceremonial observance, it affirms that the arts are central to our identity as Filipinos, and to our country’s progress. Earlier in the month, the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary held a grant application writing workshop to equip Filipino and Filipino-Canadian artists with practical tools to access funding opportunities and strengthen their project proposals. The initiative reflects the Consulate’s continuing commitment to supporting Filipino artists. END
