“Huwebes” Showcased in PCG Calgary’s Celebration of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo)

29 September 2025 – The Philippine Consulate General in Calgary marked Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Month (MANA Mo) this September with the screening of the acclaimed Filipino film Huwebes (Huwebes), co-sponsored with the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) – Alberta Chapter.

MANA Mo is observed annually to highlight the Philippines’ unique identity as an archipelagic and maritime nation. With over 7600 islands, the country’s history, culture, and economy have long been defined by the sea and the communities that live by it.

The featured film, Huwebes (Huwebes) weaves together three stories of men whose lives are changed by their encounters with the sea and its people. Through its compelling narratives, striking coastal imagery, and cinematography that immerses viewers in the rhythms of coastal life, the film explores themes of survival, livelihood, and destiny – reminding audiences of the enduring bond between Filipinos and the ocean

The screening was made possible through the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) under its Philippine Embassies Assistance Program (PEAP), which provides Philippine Embassies and Consulates abroad with access to Filipino classics and short films. This initiative enables overseas communities to celebrate Philippine cinema and the creativity of Filipino filmmakers.

Consul General Emma Sarne shared that the showing of Huwebes (Huwebes) was a meaningful way to mark MANA Mo abroad: “By bringing the film to Calgary, we not only showcase the talent of our filmmakers but also highlight a central truth about the Philippines – that the sea continues to shape our identity, our livelihoods, and our stories as a people.”

The screening was attended by members of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary – Alberta Chapter, the academe, and other members of the Filipino Community in Calgary, who joined in a short reflection session after the film. Participants shared their thoughts on the stories and reflected on their own memories of the sea as part of growing up in the Philippines, underscoring the relevance of MANA Mo to Filipinos both in the Philippines and abroad.
