Donation of Wheelchair marks the observance of the 22nd Women with Disabilities Day

30 March 2026 – In its continuing observance of Women’s Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary marked the 22nd Women With Disabilities Day (WWD) by acknowledging the donation of two (2) wheelchairs by Mr. Allan Bryan Mendros, CEO of the Canadian Wheelchair Society. WWD is observed on the last Monday of March every year pursuant to Proclamation No. 744, s. 2004.

The contribution has enabled the Consulate to provide immediate mobility support to clients, particularly women with disabilities who may require assistance during their visit. The Consulate notes that women with disabilities continue to face compounded barriers in accessing public services. The Canadian Wheelchair Society has been at the forefront of advocating for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.

“This donation by Mr. Allan Bryan Mendros of the Canadian Wheelchair Society, alongside similar efforts from the Filipino Community in Alberta, forms part of a continuing push toward greater equity, accessibility, and empowerment of women,” said Consul General Emma Sarne during the simple turnover ceremony earlier in the year.

Beyond the provision of equipment, the initiative reflects a shared commitment among the Consulate, the Filipino community, and partner organizations in Calgary to advancing safe and inclusive spaces, ensuring that women – particularly those in vulnerable sectors – can access services with dignity, comfort, and respect in the spirit of #WeGiveToGain.

The wheelchairs have been readily available to clients who may require mobility assistance during their visit to the Consulate and have been greatly appreciated by our Kababayan, contributing to a more accessible and welcoming environment for all. END
