Oligase and Baboy Halas Spotlight National Indigenous Peoples’ Month at Calgary PCG’s Filipino Film Caravan 2025

30 October 2025 – In its month-long celebration of National Indigenous Peoples’ Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary held the latest edition of its Filipino Film Caravan 2025, featuring two acclaimed Mindanaoan films – Baboy Halas (Wailings in the Forest) and Oligase (Demon of Fear) – that bring to life the beliefs, identities, and struggles of the Philippines’ indigenous peoples as they encounter the challenges of the modern world.

The screening invited the wider Alberta audience to journey deep into the cultural landscapes of Mindanao, where oral traditions, spirituality, and ancestral memory intertwine with contemporary realities. Both films, produced in indigenous language of the Matigsalug offer a rare and authentic window into the communities they portray, reminding viewers of the depth and diversity of the Filipino cultural experience.

Consul General Emma Sarne noted that this year’s film caravan is part of the Consulate’s continuing effort to promote Filipino creativity and cultural awareness in Alberta, while honoring the voices of indigenous peoples who safeguard the Philippines’ earliest stories and way of life.

“Through the Filipino Film Festival, we not only celebrate artistic excellence,” Consul General Sarne said, “but also deepen our understanding of the indigenous heritage that forms the soul of the Filipino identity.”

Baboy Halas portrayed the daily life of the Matigsalug family dwelling in the forests of the Southern Philippines. Oligase explores the struggle of Indigenous people against education and societal limitations. Both films show the lives of an indigenous family from the Matigsalug tribe, which highlights cultural identity, inter-tribal relations, and justice systems.

The Filipino Film Caravan remains one of the Consulate’s flagship cultural diplomacy initiatives, using the medium of film to build bridges between Filipino and Canadian communities and to showcase the Philippines’ rich and evolving creative landscape.

The Consulate reaffirms its commitment to promoting cultural understanding and celebrating the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to our common heritage and identity. END.
