The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Vancouver continued to intensify efforts to link OFWs to relevant training and certification programs by proactively conducting information sessions. On 22 May 2026, Filipino skilled trades workers from Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Yukon attended the 3rd Information Session on the UBC Bridge to Red Seal Program.

In her welcome remarks, PCG Calgary Consul General Emma Sarne highlighted the significant contributions of Filipino skilled workers to Alberta’s construction, infrastructure, energy, and other key industries. She emphasized the importance of programs like the UBC Bridge to Red Seal Program in helping internationally trained workers gain recognition for their skills and experience and pursue Canadian certification. The Consul General reaffirmed the Philippine government’s commitment to supporting the professional growth and economic empowerment of Filipinos in Canada.

During the session, Evie Nance, Project Coordinator for Western Canada of the UBC Bridge to Red Seal Program, discussed eligibility requirements, application procedures, available supports, and the benefits of obtaining Red Seal certification which include enhanced mobility and more secure employment for trade workers. The information sessions have yielded positive results, such that several OFWs in trade occupations are now preparing their documents and getting ready to challenge the Red Seal exam with support from the UBC Program.

The MWO will continue its ongoing efforts to facilitate Filipino workers’ access to upskilling, employability, and foreign credential recognition programs in Canada, in line with the Department of Migrant Workers’ mandate to promote OFW welfare and development.
